We keep hearing people talk about having trouble participating in live auctions. Some people register in the IRC and think that’s all you need to do. It’s not that simple, but it IS simple. Anyone can do it, and so can you!
There are two main steps: signing up for a donor account and registering your nickname on IRC. In less than ten steps, you too can step to the legendary Octopimp!
But first, you need to get a donor account. Follow these steps!
Step 1: Go to http://donor.desertbus.org/register.
Step 2: Enter your email address and choose a password.
Step 3: Check your email for a confirmation email from Desert Bus and click the activation link within the email.
Step 4: (Optional) Enter any profile information you want to enter.
Step 5: (Optional) If the email you used is NOT the same as the email you used for your Paypal account, go to your profile and add the email connected to Paypal under Additional Emails. This will allow you to see all of your donations in your Donation History
Now that you have a Donor Account, you can bid on Silent Auctions. To bid on Live Auctions, you also need to register on the IRC chat:
Step 1: Head over to http://desertbus.org/ and click on the “Chat” button to open the IRC chat.
Step 2: Register your nick with the following command, entered into the chat without quotes, replacing [[PASSWORD]] and [[EMAIL]] with your password and email address: “/msg nickserv register [[PASSWORD]] [[EMAIL]]”
Step 3: Check your email for a confirmation email. Copy the command within this email into the chat.
Step 4: Whenever you enter the chat, use “/msg nickserv identify [[PASSWORD]]” to login.
And you’re done! That’s it! It’s so easy, a rock could do it! If you still have problem, please private message Fugiman in the IRC or email us. (It’s best not to comment in this thread; we’ll see emails much quicker.)

Apparently I’m banned from the chat channel? Which is odd, since I never even said
anything. Yet when I try to open the chat, I get You are banned from the channel #desertbus
Any idea how to fix this? It really isn’t the same without looking at chat.

Sorry for spamming up the comments but I can’t really think of a better way to get a hold of someone in charge.
If you can get on the irc server but not in the channel you can PM an op with “/msg Kroze Help I think I’ve been wrongly banned.” minus the quotes
the second step of the second step makes no sense to me, do i type my email in the username thing?

In IRC chat type “/msg nickserv REGISTER password email” without the quotes and replace password and email with your password for chat and the same email you used for the donor account.
If you did it correctly, you will get an email asking you to confirm your registration.
Oh, I think I get what you’re asking. No, enter any desired username you want and type that command in the bar at the bottom after you’ve connected to the server.
OOOOOOOOOOOOH. ok, thanks, i thought you had to put it in when you logged in.
May I please request that the bid format be added to this FAQ?
The format that one has to bid in I mean; like it was:
“BID_$amount”
The bid format is bid ####.##
With the ## being your bid amount.
No underscore.
Bid can be lowercase or uppercase.
No $.

I’ve been trying to register with the the chat for the past few days to bid on stuff. I have a donor account but when I try to match it to my chat ID I either get banned from the chat or told my email isn’t valid. My email is working. I can’t figure out why I can’t get recognized.

Make sure you are following the instructions above and if you are having problems send a private message to a moderator (Kroze, Ashton or Fugiman depending on who’s on). You should not be getting banned from the chat just for registering incorrectly
