A delight of selecting prizes for Desert Bus is selecting prizes that would not work for other fundraisers, but will certainly find an audience at Desert Bus. Or at least that is Erika's excuse for picking two books of military history for this year!
First up is The Irish Mars by Andreas Claudianus, translated by Kjeld Hald Galster and Rasmus Wichmann. This book is a first hand account of the late 17th Century Williamite War, fought between the forces of Jacobite Ireland and France against a coalition of England, Scotland, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Claudianus provides an account from the view of the common foot soldier of the Danish campaign of the war.
Next is Cannae: Studies in Envelopment by Alfred von Schlieffen. As Chief of Germany's Great General Staff Schlieffen was tasked with figuring out how Germany could fight a war on two fronts. He focused Hannibal's victory at the Battle of Cannae in 216 BCE, and compares it with other similar battles through history.
