Winner: BraveOthello for $7,222.23
A triptych. Watercolour, gouache & ink, with hand-carved matboard, in three parts:
1. “Travellers, spiritually”. Korra & Asami Satō 佐藤麻美, with the Republic City skyline. The Legend of Korra (2012–2014).
2. “Partners, chronologically”. Max Caulfield & Chloe Price, with the Arcadia Bay lighthouse. Life is Strange (2015).
3. “Batatas, fearlessly”. Luz Noceda & Amity Blight, with Eda’s Owl House. The Owl House (2020–2023).
The past 15 years have seen an explosion of LGBTQIA2S+ representation in animation. This craft is a celebration of the sapphic couples that have appeared in that media.
It consists of 3 separate pieces intended to be viewed together as a single work of art. Each piece is a watercolour painting, with linework in India ink; this is surrounded by quotations from the source media representing each relationship, rendered in broad-nib calligraphy with gouache paint.
Each part is each accompanied by a silhouette hand-carved into the inner matboard, representing important locations to each world and each couple, making the frame into an integral part of the artistic expression of the craft.
This piece comes in three separate frames, each identical in size, approximately 16’’ by 12’’ each (40. × 30. cm). They are intended to be viewed in the order shown in the first photograph.
The pieces were mounted into frames using conservation framing materials and techniques, ensuring that, if well cared for, they will last for decades to come. This includes conservation-grade (PPFA Class II) matboard,
acid-free backing board, a sealed frame rebate (rabbet), and UV-filtering non-glare acrylic glazing (Acrylite OP- 3/P-99).
This craft was lovingly and proudly hand-crafted by the crafter (except the frames and backing board, which were professionally cut-to-order).
Additional photographs on kind.social and Instagram. Further information on materials, care instructions, and re-framing is included as a paper insert in the box or by contacting the crafter.
