Changing Donation Sidebar

Posted by: Paul

Chipin is a great service that allows us to collect donations on behalf of Child’s Play without being hit with double paypal fees like we were last year. Unfortunately, it appears that their donation widget has some problems with caching that results in different people seeing different donation totals. In order to make sure that the donation total is always as up-to-date as possible, we have decided to forgo the widget and update the value manually whenever it changes.

All donations are still being handled by Chipin and the Donate link on the sidebar will take you to exactly the same place as the link in the widget did.

If you are having any problems or have any questions about the donation process, please email me at paul@loadingreadyrun.com

  1. Good to know I’m not the only one seeing weird things.

  4. It worked well enough last year . . . we just need to stay on top of things :) . We’re monitoring the donations pretty closely as they come in, anyway.

  5. I would think that using ChipIn/Paypal you could set up an IPN to auto update it for you… but this works too.

    Yay for Paul!

  6. They won’t be updated minute-to-minute, I’m sure, but at the least hourly, which is more than good enough IMO.

  7. or you know, you could do both systems….the widget and updating it yourselves

  8. @krzwis – We thought about that, but the problem is that you then have two potentially conflicting values for the total donations. This way the updates might be a little slower (although we will try to keep on top of it) but at least everything should be consistant.
